Introduction
This is the beginning of a collection of impressions and thoughts generated while on various trips – usually on horseback in remote areas. Funny how some solitude while surrounded by nature and the works of God can give a person a little more insight than the same time spent in the hustle and bustle workday world.

Please remember that the author has absolutely no literary talent and wouldn't know a sonnet from sonar. It is hoped that those with similar interests may have shared understanding of the ramblings of an old man.

"Lou from Lawrence County"

I met Lou for the first time just a few days shy of his 50th birthday. I don't remember much of that first meeting but within a very few years, Lou and I became best of friends. We shared our lives for over 30 years. Lou died when I was a little more than 30 myself – 3 decades ago. I still talk to him everyday – more so when I am riding a horse in the hills of Southern Ohio.

"Return on Investment Analysis"

In my daily business activities, Return on Investment Analysis is a major concern. We spend hours of research and examination on behalf of our clients and our own ventures. Increasing R.O.I. 1% is a cause for significant celebration.

The rest of my life is spent in the world of horses...a world where R.O.I. has a different method of calculation. About 10 years ago I spent more money than I had at the time to buy our daughter a horse for her 16th birthday. She already was a horse owner who displayed some talent and a significant interest. This new horse, I hoped, would further that interest and ability as well as serving as a link to her old Dad and a distraction from what I considered to be negative influences – like boys. "Chance", a big sorrel gelding, was well received and apparently loved. Distractions, though generally positive, did occur. "The Last Trail Ride"

Early morning December 24th in the year 2037.

The sun hadn't shown itself as the little old man awakened. His first response was to roll over and hug his wife. It saddened him to find that she wasn't there. As sleep went away and consciousness rose he realized that she hadn't been there for two years now. The emptiness still hung with him.
